Are you counting your trials and slipping into a spiral of overwhelm?

Learn how to count your trials as blessings, quickly turn to the Lord and win the battle between flesh and the enemy!

Recently a client messaged me about how she felt she had been doing so great working with processing her emotions and being calmer at home.

And then…

One night she spiraled. She had a rough few moments with her kids and began feeling like the worst mom in the world. She was worried she was regressing and losing all the progress she’s made since beginning to work with me.

After listening to her, I validated her feelings and told her sometimes we do feel like the worst moms in the world.

Sometimes we get on a downward spiral. And it’s okay, it’s normal, there is nothing wrong with you for spiraling.

These negative spirals are one of the battles we face, in our flesh, as the enemy tries to take us down.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12 NKJV

Here are a few strategies you can use when spiraling down in negative emotions:

1. Appreciate the downward spirals!

This works because by looking at the negative spirals as a positive thing we can use what the enemy is trying to create for harm to remind us to run back into the faithful, loving Father’s arms who will take our enemy down and out!

2. Reset and refocus – stand up, dust yourself off!

When you feel overwhelmed and on a negative spiral what you are really doing is focusing on yourself.

You take your focus off of the Lord and what He can do and begin listening to the lies of the enemy saying…

“You’ll never change, you can’t get through this. You’re not capable. God gave you more than you can handle! You’re a failure!”

You end up believing that you have to figure out how to fix your problems and feelings on your own.

Even if you have help, love, and support from others around us, you can still feel burdened and alone.

But it’s a lie and here is the proof…

“For I hold you by your right hand— I, the Lord your God. And I say to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.” Isaiah‬ ‭41:13‬ ‭NLT‬‬

This verse says we don’t have to do anything on our own!

3. Stop, Inhale, Tune In & Pray

This will stop the enemy and bring you into the presence of our faithful Lord who will help you fight the battle.

God is right here with us; all we have to do is ask.

Ask Him to take our hand and show us the way.

He gives us our strength.

We don’t need anything or anyone else but him, and when we surrender to Him, we are filled with peace.

Taking God’s hand doesn’t mean our troubles will magically go away.

Asking for our Lord’s help means we can know that we are not alone, He will show us the way and by spending regular time with Him we will recognize His voice leading us to where to go next.

The Lord secures our steps and walks us through what is next.

4. Count Your Blessings

After validating my client and reminding her that we all go through these battles I told her I’d like her to end her day on a good note and check it in with me for at least three days. On the second day, she sent me this message…

“I’m so grateful you’re having me end my day by writing down three blessings from the Lord because I see how He is changing my heart! What a way to end the day! And it helps me start the next day off in a good place!”

So when you catch yourself in a negative spiral remember…

It’s normal – we all experience spiritual warfare like this.

Negative spirals are a good thing because they trigger us to…

Reset, refocus and SIT & Pray.

Spend daily time with the Lord and let Him fight your battles!

He will fill, strengthen, and help you stay focused on Jesus.
